Why is Skálholt important?

In Skálholt there are frequent cultural, educational and artistic events and retreats. The present Cathedral was consecrated in 1963 and is the 10th church standing on exactly the same site. It is decorated with valuable art, both old and new. In the crypt there is a small exhibition from the National Museum with items excavated in Skálholt.

What happened to St Thorlac's reliquary at Skálholt Cathedral?

The sacred reliquary of St. Thorlac (sixth bishop of Skálholt) was maintained at the cathedral until it too was destroyed in 1550, when his mortal remains were strewn about the cathedral grounds.
